🇳🇬 Killarney Celtic was founded in 1976 by two Killarney locals, Mike Daly and Billy Healy (now living in Seattle, USA). The reason for starting the club was simply to give interested players a chance to play soccer on a regular basis.
This day 49 years ago Celtic’s first competitive game was away to Castleisland B on 24 October 1976 in Division 3 of the Kerry League. They went the entire first season unbeaten and won promotion, repeated that achievement the following season and, before they knew it, they were in the top flight where they have remained ever since.
Some of the great players in those early days included Patsy Flaherty, Paddy Mayse, Seanie Kelliher, Mikey Daly’s brother Brendan, Denis O’Connor, James and Tedso O’Connor & Tom O’Shea.
They were later joined by the Lynes of Cleeney, Ray and Mark Hoctor and the Spa contingent of Neilie O’Doherty, Billy Morris, Sean Cronin and the Cahill brothers, John, James, Willie and Mike.
