On a sunny afternoon in Celtic Park , Killarney Celtic girls came out the right side of a heart stopping epic semi final following extra time against the much vaunted Shelbourne FC academy side who were a superbly drilled outfit. In the first half Celtic took the lead with a spectacular long range strike from Sadbh O’ Halloran and a couple of occasions came close to increasing lead 1-0 HT.
In the second half Shelbourne dominated possession and got a deserved equaliser from a corner kick which we failed to clear to make it 1-1 full time. In extra time the game ebbed and flowed and Celtic struck for the winner with a fantastic header from Holly Forrest from a great delivery free kick by Tara Cronin our keeper with 5 mins remaining and we closed the game out.
Celtic girls played with great heart and no little skill against a Shels side who were technically brilliant and probably we had more clear cut chances from less possession. Tara Cronin was as always magnificent in goal, our back 4 were unbelievable under the cosh , Keelin O’Shea cleared a lot of ball, our midfield ran themselves into the ground particularly Ellen Allman and Niamh Brosnan, on the flanks Ali Bowler made some great runs and covered the terrain. Upfront we were always dangerous with Sadbh O’Halloran and Holly Forrest and precocious sub Leah Mannix whose link up play was superb ,and gave us an outlet with our no 8 Michelle O’Connor who was our midfield creative force but had to go off injured but came back heroically for stint in 2nd half and ET until her legs gave out. Our best performers were from our defence Lauren Buckley at centre back and Ciara Forde left back in particular steadfast and unbeatable all through but our girl of the match was our captain Lan O’Connor who marshmalled the back 4 and lead from the front and must have had the most touches and clearances on the ball from beginning to finish and also started a lot of our transitions into attack.
We roll on to final but know we will have to find more improvements in several areas, but our girls hunger and desire to win today particularly in extra time will stand to us .
đź‘ŹThanks to Tom Sheehy who was a most efficient referee.
đź‘ŹThanks to Shelbourne FC who showed their quality and will have better days ahead.

đź‘ŹThank you to all the supporters that came out to cheer the girls on, it was greatly appreciated.
