A close game played in very windy conditions. Celtic played against the wind in the first half and, for the first 10 mins, struggled to get any possession of the ball but defended brilliantly and gave Mastergeeha no clear-cut chances. As the half went on Celtic grew into the game and started to get to grips with the conditions and created some great chances, the best of which was from Oleg who recieved the ball inside his own half and beat two defenders to race clear and hit a driving shot off the post with the keeper well beaten. Next up 2 good chances for Jack O’Callaghan which were just off target and then a sucker punch as our stand in keeper Andrew Sheehan was beaten from a header from a Mastergeeha corner against the run of play. Celtic regrouped and created 2 more good chances before half time with Jason Harrington curling narrowly wide and then another chance clipping the defenders heel when it looked to be nestling in the corner.
After half time, Celtic upped the tempo with the wind, drove on with Mastergeeha sitting deeper and trying to counter. Chances were hard to come by. Great work in midfield by Ryan Moloney to win back the ball and play ball up to Mark Bartlett and Jason. Great hounding by Mark and Jason of the defenders resulted in the ball breaking to Mark, who cooly slotted home the equaliser. Celtic pushed hard for the winner but could not break down the Mastergeeha defence and could have got caught on the counter attack only for the tigerish defending of Liam Galvin who kept Mastergeeha’s #7 at bay, who on the day was their danger man. Liam was helped out by Daniel Mannix, making his first appearance at this level stepping up from the U15 to help us out and was composed and rock solid all game. With time running out, both teams pushed for the winner, and Mastergeeha came closest only for Andrew to make a double diving save to send into extra time. It looked like it was heading for the dreaded penalty shoot out but with a min to go Celtic got a free kick close to 30 yards from goal and up stepped Ryan Downing to dispatch the ball expertly into the bottom corner to give Celtic the win . Today's win was testament to the hard work of all the squad with a number of players missing but everyone of the 15 that played today were outstanding and hard to pick 1 MOTM but Ryan Moloney gets the nod for covering every blade of grass today and driving the whole team on from the start to the finish.
👏Thanks to Mastergeeha for a sporting and competitive game and also to the Ref.
👏Well done boys and management
