POTM: Sadbh O’Brien

On a squally winter night a Killarney Celtic team short of a few key starters showed the value of a committed team squad where others stepped up to the plate.

Castleisland FC who are a fine footballing side were slow to settle initially and Killarney Celtic took full advantage with Sadbh O’ Brien scoring a long range shot added to by Leah Mannix getting in behind the defence to make it 2-0 after 20m. Killarney Celtic were creating loads of chances with Sadbh O’ Halloran and Lan O’ Connor causing havoc in central midfield and Ella Murphy and Leah Mannix in particular linking the play and getting in behind the Castleisland defence regularly. Jessica Leggate pressed hard and Amelia Carroll Kelly who was trying to get on end of crosses on occasions, was unlucky not to score. Ella Murphy with another long range effort and a great finish by Leah Mannix had Killarney Celtic 4-0 and cruising after 27m. Castleisland then surged in the game being very dangerous on the counter attack through Michelle O’ Connor and hard running Holly Forest supported by their defensive midfield no 6 good passes ,and scored twice before halftime and had momentum.

The second half was a stalemate as Castleisland with the wind found it hard to break down an outstanding Celtic defence of Lauren Buckley, Niamh Brosnan, Sadbh O’ Brien & Ciara Forde supplemented by Amelia Carroll Kelly playing defensive midfield role at this stage. Tara Cronin with her excellent kick outs and quickness off her line , dealt solidly with any shots that came her way all through the game.Sadbh O’ Halloran ran herself into the ground on the wing in 2nd half supported by flashes of brilliant play from Lan O’ Connor , and Ella Murphy was an outlet on the right flank and was hugely effective.

The younger girls Michelle Doolan, Rebecca O ‘ Connell, and Orla Brosnan all made big contributions from the bench.

A special shout out to the precociously gifted Leah Mannix who is still U12 , and showed her class & composure at all times with super finishes. To pick a girl of the match was very hard from the outstanding Lauren Buckley at right back, Niamh Brosnan dominant , pacey, and fearless at centre half , and Sadbh O’ Brien whose tackling , anticipation and positioning was brilliant, but we give the nod deservedly to Sadbh O’Brien on this occasion.

👏Thanks to Castleisland FC.
